Our Story
Remedy Church was planted beginning in 2011, starting with 12 adults and 3 kids in an upstairs living room, who were sent out by Hillcrest Baptist Church in Cedar Hill, TX. There were a number of churches in Waxahachie then, but the more time we spent in Waxahachie we began to sense a need for a church that would be intentionally gospel-centered and focused on reaching the lost and making disciples in the city, particularly through being engaged in the life of the city and present in ordinary streams of life, connecting with people who are unlikely to just visit a church.
Since then we have grown and moved locations a number of times, being mobile for the first ten years of our history. In October of 2021, the pastor of South Prong Baptist Church reached out to us to say they were closing their doors and wanted to give their entire campus to us. Through a series of conversations and a season of prayer we felt confirmation that the Lord was indeed leading that way and richly providing for us through other saints.
That is the short version of how we started and how we got to where we are today, and God has proven himself powerful and faithful all along the way.
Why the name “Remedy Church?”
In the Bible, names often correlate with identity. Abraham means “father of a multitude,” Paul means “little” or “humble,” and Jesus means “Yahweh saves!” The words “remedy” and “church” also have specific meanings that are central to who we are.
REMEDY
“Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.” Luke 5.31-32
On both the personal and societal levels we believe the root of every problem is sin—not just something we do, but something that is within us. A vast array of political, educational, economic, medical, and religious solutions have been proposed to fix the tangible effects of the sin disease, but ultimately they are all found lacking because they do not address the real problem.
We believe that Jesus and his gospel are the only true and permanent remedy for the sin disease. Following Jesus doesn’t erase all of life’s problems, but Jesus gives his people freedom from the eternal consequences of sin (hell) and from the enslaving power of sin over our lives. In short, we chose the name Remedy because that is what we believe Jesus is, and that is the message we carry.
CHURCH
“To the church of God that is in Corinth, to those sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints together with all those who in every place call upon the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, both their Lord and ours.” 1 Corinthians 1.2
The English word “church” is a translation of the Greek word “ekklesia,” which is defined as “a gathering, assembly, or congregation of people.” In the New Testament the word “ekklesia” was applied to the particular group of people who worshipped Jesus and met together for that purpose. Sadly, our culture has largely replaced the true meaning of “church” with the place we go on Sunday or the event we go to.
The people of Remedy are the church. This distinction is important because it means that we must live out our identity as the people of God in all our dealings—everyday, everywhere we go—not just on Sundays or at church meetings. Being the church calls for a higher and more comprehensive standard than simply going to church.
